How to Select the Right Alloy for Your Fuel Cell Needs

How to Select the Right Alloy for Your Fuel Cell Needs

Fuel cell technologies can vary significantly based on the application and power output required. However, there are some general rules of thumb to keep in mind. The more power that's needed, the bigger the fuel cell must be. Fuel cells get very hot during operation, and their environments are very corrosive. Therefore, special metals, such as Nickel 200 & 201, and austenitic stainless-steel alloys, which contain at least 8% nickel, are resistant to corrosion and high temperatures, are often used in fuel cell applications. Other critical components include alloy thickness for more efficient systems to meet higher voltage needs, advanced surface control capabilities for strong corrosion resistance, and tight tolerances (and flatness) to ensure systems operate at peak performance.

How We Optimize Precision-Rolled Alloys for Fuel Cells

How We Optimize Precision-Rolled Alloys for Fuel Cells

In order to have an optimal fuel cell, the alloys must undergo the proper secondary processes and finishes. Corrosion resistance and tight tolerances are extremely important for creating efficient, high-performance fuel cells. Corrosion resistance is important since fuel cells are often used in harsh, highly corrosive environments, while the tight tolerance (flatness) of the bipolar plates allow for more power-generating fuel cell membranes to be stacked, making for more efficient systems to meet higher voltage needs. Ulbrich has the knowledge of what it takes to create a better fuel cell. Learn more about these crucial factors by reading our fuel cell optimization article. Once you've decided which alloy is right for your application, a development partner can help you.
